The LM7805 is one of the most widely used positive voltage regulators, providing a fixed +5V output for various electronic circuits. It belongs to the LM78xx series and comes in the popular TO-220 package.
This IC can handle output currents of up to 1.5A, though adequate heat dissipation (heatsink) is recommended for high current applications due to thermal losses. For example, supplying 1A from a 12V input will result in 7W heat dissipation.
To operate correctly, the IC requires two external capacitors: 0.33µF on the input and 0.1µF on the output. These capacitors, preferably ceramic, ensure circuit stability and minimize voltage ripple.
